The Gold Coin Buying Guide

Everything you need to know before purchasing gold coins in the United Kingdom — from VAT rules to storage and authenticity.

01

VAT & Tax on Gold Coins

Investment gold — including gold coins of a purity of at least 900 thousandths and produced after 1800 — is exempt from VAT in the United Kingdom under HMRC VAT Notice 701/21. This means you pay no VAT when purchasing qualifying bullion coins such as the Sovereign or Britannia.

UK-minted coins such as the Sovereign and Britannia are also legal tender, which means any gains made on their sale are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK residents. This makes them particularly attractive for investors seeking a tax-efficient store of value.

Collectible and numismatic coins may not qualify for VAT exemption if they are not classified as investment gold. We clearly indicate the VAT status of every coin we list. If you are uncertain, our specialists are happy to advise.

02

Storing Your Gold Coins

How you store your gold coins will depend on the size of your holding and your personal circumstances. For smaller holdings, a quality home safe — bolted to the structure of your property — provides a practical and cost-effective solution. Ensure your home insurance policy covers the value of your coins.

For larger holdings, professional vault storage through a specialist bullion vault or bank safety deposit facility offers a higher level of security and may be more appropriate. Some investors prefer allocated storage, where their specific coins are held separately and identifiably.

We recommend storing coins in their original capsules or holders to protect surfaces from handling damage. Even minor contact marks can affect the grade and value of a coin, particularly for collectible pieces.

03

Authenticity & Grading

The gold coin market, like any market for valuable assets, is not without its risks. Counterfeit coins do exist, and buyers should exercise appropriate caution — particularly when purchasing from private sellers or unfamiliar dealers.

Every coin we sell has been physically examined by our specialists. For modern bullion coins, we verify weight, diameter, and edge detail against official specifications. For older and collectible pieces, we apply a more detailed assessment of die characteristics, surface quality, and provenance where available.

We grade collectible coins using standard numismatic terminology (Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine, Uncirculated) and describe any notable marks or imperfections honestly. We do not use third-party grading services as a substitute for our own assessment, though we are happy to discuss NGC or PCGS grading for clients who require it.

04

Bullion vs. Collectible Coins

Bullion coins — such as the modern Sovereign and Britannia — are priced primarily on their gold content, with a modest premium above the spot price of gold. They are the most straightforward way to invest in physical gold, and their liquidity is excellent.

Collectible or numismatic coins carry an additional premium based on their rarity, historical significance, condition, and collector demand. A Victorian Sovereign in exceptional condition may command a premium of 20–100% or more above its bullion value. This premium can grow over time, but it can also be volatile.

Many of our clients hold both: a core bullion position for straightforward gold exposure, supplemented by selected collectible pieces that offer the additional pleasure of ownership and the potential for numismatic appreciation.
